Top marks for school project
A group project on the life of Dr Aidan MacCarthy carried out by seven pupils from classes 5 and 6 at Urhan National School, Beara, was judged the best oral history project in the annual Discover Cork: Schools Heritage Project in March 2017.
The pupils, who worked on the project with their teacher Mary Majella O'Mahoney, were awarded a certificate and a rosette.
Fifty schools took part in Cork city and county with 1,500 students submitting more than 400 projects on all aspects of Cork’s past. Established in 2002/3, the Discover Cork: Schools Heritage Project is co-ordinated by the Cork historian Cllr Kieran McCarthy.
Members of the Urhan NS group took their prize-winning project into MacCarthy's Bar to show it to Adrienne and Niki MacCarthy who were delighted to see it.
* The project was undertaken by 11 and 12-year-olds Sophie Crowley, Jerome O'Shea, Emma O'Shea, Eimear Sheehan, Mary Sheehan, Aaron Considine and Emma Harrington. Some of its pages are pictured here.
